Why I Made This Pineapple Pussy
BY TAMARA PALMER
Members of a Facebook group called San Francisco Remembered have reminisced multiple times about Magnolia Thunderpussy, a late-night naughty dessert delivery service that operated in the Sixties out of Dish, a restaurant on the corner of Haight and Masonic Streets, as well as out of a former club on Bush Street called the Boarding House.
The provocative service was owned by Magnolia Thunderpussy, a former burlesque star and radio gossip columnist, and her most popular desserts were two sundaes called Pineapple Pussy and Barney’s Montana Banana.
After reading about this a few times on San Francisco Remembered and finding little else about her online, save for her 1996 obituary, I decided to recreate the Pineapple Pussy for 2020 as a culinary tribute — and also because the co-founder of Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream recently came by with six pints of ice cream.
I used Humphry Slocombe’s Strawberry Blondie ice cream, a Bella Royale peacotum (peach/apricot/plum baby from Galpin Family Farms), Blue House Farm spearmint and dragonfruit inside a Oaxacan Gold pineapple.
Watch out, Montana Banana — you’re next.
