San Jose's Favorite Guava Cake Is Back

Honey and Pearl now has an extensive menu of dairy and vegan cakes, pies and cookies that can be delivered throughout the Bay Area. It’s my number one recommendation for birthdays and holidays this year, but there’s one specific item I’d like to make sure you know about — especially if you grew up in San Jose or the South Bay.

The guava cake from Aki’s Bakery in San Jose, which closed after more than 40 years in business, was a huge cult favorite. It’s often been imitated in the area (and on YouTube), but Honey and Pearl’s prodigious baker Tamara Suzanne was actually the assistant manager at Aki’s, so she actually knows what she’s doing. Honey and Pearl scoured the outer reaches of the Bay Area to source the right ingredients, because this vibrant, memorable flavor can’t be achieved by any old guava product.

This cake is also insanely good straight out of the freezer, if you have the self-kindness to stow a few slices away when you get it. Peep their holiday menu and tell them the other Tamara sent you.
