Behold the 69-Layer Matcha Crepe Cake

I have often joked that people should just go ahead and send my mail to Sawtelle Avenue because I want to live there. I’ve spent the last two years photographing food in Los Angeles’ Japantown, where there’s a concentration of really fun places in about a four-block span. There are a few more places I want to hit before I publish a full guide, but in the meantime, I thought you’d like to know that there’s now a 69-layer matcha crepe cake with charcoal crepes and matcha cream cheese on Sawtelle — it lives at the first U.S. location of Beijing’s Matcha Village.

“When people say matcha, they automatically associate it with Japan. Japan has really put matcha on the map, but matcha dates back to the Tang Dynasty so we really want to bring it back to its roots and showcase what we can do with Chinese matcha. Our matcha is certified organic,” the store’s manager, Lieon Wang, told Eater LA.

The cake is served with a side of condensed milk for total overkill. The table next to us audibly gasped when we poured it over the cake to take the picture up top.

Can you count all the layers?

I’ll be back soon to try the Peking duck crepe (one of several intriguing savory options) — and probably another slice of this cake.
