#FBF: When Mac Dre Energy Drinks Ruled the Bay
BY TAMARA PALMER
Five years after the charismatic Bay Area rapper Mac Dre was killed in 2004, two local companies released competing Mac Dre energy drinks for a brief moment in time. Fairfield's Hyphydration Beverage Co. offered Thizz Juice, while Oakland company 100 Racks Inc. (aka Hunid Racks) sold a drink called Mac Dre Feel'N Myself.
I did a comparison taste test of both for SF Weekly back in 2009, but the site’s archives are honestly so terrible and incomplete, the blog post cuts off before anyone can see the verdict. I don’t remember exactly why I thought Thizz Juice was better than Feel’N Myself and I generally think that all energy drinks taste fairly horrid, but I do remember enjoying the flavor of Hunid Racks’ 2Pac Energy Drink more than the taste of Thizz Juice or Hyphy, the energy drink released by Oakland’s It’s Good Beverage Company (which I believe was run by “Slow Down” rapper Clyde Carson).
The local hyphy energy drink industry definitely came and went in a flash, but the memories of the beverages that were inspired by a musical movement still live on.
You can still get a taste of Mac Dre these days; Livermore’s Altamont Beer Works brews Mac Drizzle: The Boss of Beers, an Imperial/Double Black IPA.
